History of India, for the purpose of study and to bring out more clearly the forces, trends and institutions that have shaped history at a given point and time, has been divided into the Ancient,Medieval and Modern Periods.
The Ancient period starts from the earliest time to mid-8th century AD.The raids of Mahmud of Ghazni or the establishment of Sultanate of Delhi, which is taken by many as the beginning of the Medieval Period.Similarly, conventional periodisation identifies the Battle of Plassey, 1757,as the beginning of the Modern Period.Instead, now the break up of the Mughal Empire and the emergence of the regional powers in the middle decades of the 18th century is taken as the indicator of the change from the Medieval to the Modern period.
